Level 1: Habitable Zone
Concrete, dim, and no longer empty. Level 1 is where the Backrooms stop feeling abandoned and start feeling occupied.
- Entities
- Present and active. Hounds and Facelings are both commonly reported.
- Environment
- Dimmer and colder than Level 0. Water pools in the lower sections.
- Resources
- Better than Level 0. Crates, pallets and abandoned supply caches appear.
Most people arrive on Level 1 by accident, walking out of Level 0 without ever noticing the transition. The wallpaper stops. The concrete starts. And for the first time, you are not alone.
What changes
Level 1 trades Level 0’s uniform yellow for grey industrial concrete — warehouse floors, loading corridors, exposed structural pillars and the occasional catwalk overhead. The lighting is worse: fewer fixtures, more of them dead, and long stretches lit only by whatever spills around a corner.
Water is the other difference. It pools in the low sections, sometimes ankle deep, and it is a genuine hazard for two reasons. It hides what is underfoot, and it makes you loud.
The noise problem
On Level 0 you can be careless. On Level 1 you cannot.
Sound carries a long way across open concrete, and the entities here hunt by it. The single most effective survival habit on this level is walking slowly through standing water rather than through it at speed. Explorers who die on Level 1 usually die because they ran.
What lives here
Level 1 is the first level with a consistent entity population:
- Hounds patrol the open floors and hunt by sound. They are fast in a straight line and poor at corners.
- Facelings wander the corridors and are largely indifferent unless approached or startled.
Neither is a guaranteed encounter. Both are common enough that you should assume one is nearby and behave accordingly.
Resources
The compensation for the increased danger is that Level 1 actually has supplies. Wooden crates, shipping pallets and small caches left by previous explorers turn up regularly, and almond water is more common here than anywhere above it.
Cache discipline matters: take what you need, leave the rest, and mark the location. The explorer who finds it after you may be you, three hours later, having gone in a circle.
Getting out
Descending to Level 2 usually happens through a maintenance door, a stairwell, or a gap in the flooring in the deeper industrial sections. Going back up to Level 0 is possible but unreliable — the transition does not run cleanly in reverse.
Entities on this level
- HighHoundFast, effectively blind, and hunting entirely by sound. Hounds are the most common lethal encounter in the upper levels — and the most escapable.
- ModerateFacelingHumanoid, featureless and mostly indifferent. Facelings ignore you completely until you do something that makes them stop ignoring you.
