Faceling
Also known as Facelings, Blank Ones
Humanoid, featureless and mostly indifferent. Facelings ignore you completely until you do something that makes them stop ignoring you.
Disposition
Neutral — reacts to provocation
Warning signs
- A human silhouette that does not react to your light
- Footsteps that keep an unnaturally even rhythm
- Groups standing still, facing nothing in particular
A Faceling is shaped like a person and lit like a person and moves like a person, right up until you get close enough to see that the head has no features at all — no eyes, no mouth, nothing.
Why they are not the danger you think
Facelings are the entity most likely to cause a panic response and least likely to justify one. The overwhelming majority of encounters end with the Faceling walking past and continuing to wherever it was going.
They appear to have some form of social structure, they cluster, and they move with apparent purpose. What they do not appear to have is any interest in humans — as prey, as threat, or as anything at all.
When they become dangerous
Three documented triggers, in rough order of how reliably they cause a reaction:
- Sustained physical contact. Brushing past is tolerated. Grabbing is not.
- Blocking their path. They will route around an obstacle once. Standing in the way repeatedly is treated as an act.
- Aggression toward one of a group. Facelings in numbers respond collectively, and a group response is not survivable on foot.
What actually works
The correct handling is almost aggressively boring: keep walking, keep your distance, do not stare, do not touch. Facelings are a hazard in the way that traffic is a hazard — dangerous only if you interact with it wrongly.
Explorers who treat every Faceling encounter as an emergency exhaust themselves and make noise, which attracts things that genuinely are one.
