High danger

Level 2: Pipe Dreams

Endless narrow maintenance tunnels, scalding pipes and near-total darkness. Level 2 punishes noise harder than any level above it.

Entities
Smilers are endemic. Encounters in the dark are effectively unavoidable.
Environment
Hot, cramped, unlit. Steam vents without warning.
Resources
Almost none. Carry in whatever you expect to need.

Level 2 is the first level that feels actively hostile rather than merely indifferent. The corridors narrow to shoulder width, the ceiling drops, and the lights stop almost entirely.

The environment is the threat

Before any entity, the level itself will hurt you.

The tunnels are lined with pipes carrying something hot. Contact burns. Some vents release steam on no schedule anyone has ever established, and in a corridor you cannot turn around in, a steam release is not survivable at close range.

The heat is constant — high enough that dehydration becomes a real clock. This is the level where explorers who did not carry water discover the mistake.

Darkness and Smilers

Level 2 is where Smilers are endemic. They exist only in darkness, they do not move while observed, and the only thing you will ever see of one is the grin.

The tactical problem is specific: your light source is simultaneously the only thing keeping Smilers away and the thing announcing your position to everything else in the tunnel. There is no resolution to that trade-off, only management. The consensus approach is short, infrequent bursts of light for navigation rather than a continuous beam.

Movement discipline

Three rules, in order of how often ignoring them kills people:

  1. Never run. The corridors are too narrow to recover from a stumble and too hot to fall against.
  2. Test the floor. Grating fails. Some of it is over drops.
  3. Do not backtrack in the dark. If you cannot see the way you came, wait for light rather than feeling for it.

Getting out

Descent to Level 3 comes through the drainage sections, where the tunnels widen and the pipework gives way to electrical conduit. It is one of the few transitions in the upper Backrooms that is reliably findable: follow the cables, not the pipes.
