What is The Backrooms?
The Backrooms began as a single anonymous image post: a photograph of an empty, yellow-wallpapered room, and a caption warning that if you noclip out of reality in the wrong place, this is where you land. No monsters, no explanation — just a space that feels wrong because it looks like somewhere you have already been.
That is the feeling this game is built around. You wake up in a level you did not enter, in a building with no outside. The carpet is damp. The fluorescent lights buzz at a pitch that never quite resolves. Corridors loop back on themselves in ways that should not be geometrically possible, and the only way out is forward.
How to play
You wake up already lost. There is no inventory, no weapon and no map — the whole game is you, the rooms, and what you can hear. It is deliberately spare, and that is what makes it work.
- Find the sound. One continuous sound runs underneath everything. It leads to the escape. Everything else you hear does not.
- Look at what you hear. When a Friend announces itself, you must look at it. Turning away is the mistake.
- Keep moving toward the source. The exit is placed somewhere different every run, so there is no route to memorise — only a sound to follow.
Deaf Mode
The second mode takes your hearing away, which removes the thing Classic Mode is built around. With no sound to follow you navigate by finding the way that does not change — and the rule for Friends inverts. Instead of looking at what you hear, you must look away from what you see.
It sounds like a small change. It is a completely different game, and considerably worse to be inside of.

That is the complete list. There is no sprint, no flashlight and no interact key — you walk, you look, and you listen.
Tips for new players
- Wear headphones. In Classic Mode the game is played almost entirely through audio, and on laptop speakers you lose the direction of the sound you need.
- Learn the difference between the continuous sound and everything else. The first few deaths are usually from following the wrong one.
- Do not run from a Friend you have heard. Look at it. The instinct to turn away is exactly backwards in Classic Mode.
- Play Classic before Deaf. Deaf Mode assumes you already know the rule it inverts.

Is The Backrooms free to play?

Do I need to download anything?
No. It is a WebGL build, so it runs inside the browser tab itself. Nothing is installed on your computer.
What are the controls?
WASD or the arrow keys to walk, and the mouse to look around. Escape or P pauses. That is the whole control set — there is no sprint, flashlight or interact key.
Can I play The Backrooms on mobile?
The game is built for keyboard and mouse, so a desktop or laptop is strongly recommended. The guides on this site read fine on any phone.
What is the goal of the game?
Find the escape. In Classic Mode you follow a continuous sound towards it; the exit is placed somewhere different on every run, so you cannot memorise the route.

The things that share the Backrooms with you. In Classic Mode you hear one before you see it, and you must look at it. In Deaf Mode the rule inverts: you see it first, and you must look away.

Is The Backrooms scary?
It leans on atmosphere, sound design and dread rather than gore or jump-scare spam. Headphones make it considerably worse, in the best way.
