What is The Backrooms?
The Backrooms began as a single anonymous image post: a photograph of an empty, yellow-wallpapered room, and a caption warning that if you noclip out of reality in the wrong place, this is where you land. No monsters, no explanation — just a space that feels wrong because it looks like somewhere you have already been.
That is the feeling this game is built around. You wake up in a level you did not enter, in a building with no outside. The carpet is damp. The fluorescent lights buzz at a pitch that never quite resolves. Corridors loop back on themselves in ways that should not be geometrically possible, and the only way out is forward.
How to play
Every run generates a new layout, so route memorisation will not save you. What will save you is method:
- Explore deliberately. Sweep rooms, vents and service corridors for supplies before you commit to a direction.
- Stay lit. Your sanity drains in darkness. Well-lit zones are slower but they keep your head clear.
- Listen first. Every entity announces itself before it appears. The hum changing pitch is information, not atmosphere.
- Escape. Find the doorway, the elevator or the fault in the wall that drops you to the next level.

Tips for new explorers
- Note the pitch of the hum. Silence is not calm — silence is usually the thing that happens just before something else does.
- Drop items to mark rooms you have cleared. Without markers you will walk the same loop three times and never know it.
- Almond water restores sanity and a little health, but only drink sealed bottles.
- Crouch near vents. Not everything down here uses the corridors.
