Level 4: Abandoned Office

Empty offices with working lights, running water and unlocked doors. Level 4 looks like relief, and that is the most dangerous thing about it.

Entities
Rare. Long stretches with no encounters at all.
Environment
Stable and lit. Functioning plumbing. Doors that open and close normally.
Resources
Good by Backrooms standards. Water, occasional food, usable supplies.

After Level 3, Level 4 feels like being let out. The lights work. The doors open. There is drinkable water. Explorers routinely describe it as the first place in the Backrooms where they felt safe — which is precisely the problem with it.

What it is

Open-plan offices and meeting rooms, laid out like a corporate floor that everyone left in an orderly fashion. Desks, chairs, whiteboards, the occasional functioning vending machine. The lighting is even and complete. There is no hum.

The silence is the first thing that unsettles people who have been on Levels 0 through 3, because they have spent days navigating by sound and Level 4 gives them nothing to navigate by.

Why it is rated moderate

Nothing about the environment will hurt you. The rating is behavioural.

Level 4 is where explorers stop. They find a room with a door that locks, they rest, and then they rest again, and the rest becomes a stay. There are documented cases of people remaining on Level 4 for extended periods and becoming steadily less capable of leaving — not through any anomaly, but through ordinary human reluctance to walk back into a place like Level 3.

The other hazard is complacency carried downward. Habits learned on Level 4 — walking normally, talking, using light freely — will get you killed within an hour of Level 5.

Practical guidance

  • Resupply and move. Water and food here are genuinely worth collecting. Treat it as a stop, not a destination.
  • Set a departure point before you rest. Decide when you are leaving before you sit down, because the decision gets harder afterwards.
  • Re-establish discipline before descending. Light, sound and pace habits should be back in place before you find the exit, not after.

The rooms that are not offices

A minority of Level 4 is not office space: storage rooms, stairwells and corridors that do not connect to anything on a floor plan. These sections are where the level’s few entity reports come from, and where the exits are.

The two facts are related, and everyone who has written about Level 4 has noticed it.
