Skin-Stealer
Also known as Skin Stealers, Wearers
It wants your skin and it is patient. Skin-Stealers imitate people badly, which is the only reason anybody survives meeting one.
Disposition
Hostile — attacks on detection
Warning signs
- Skin that fits wrong — loose at the joints, tight across the face
- Speech that repeats your own phrasing back at you
- Blinking, breathing or smiling at intervals that are too regular
Skin-Stealers are the most dangerous entity a person is likely to meet in the upper Backrooms, and the danger is almost entirely social rather than physical. They do not ambush. They approach, and they talk.
The imitation
A Skin-Stealer wears human skin that is not its own and did not fit its previous owner either. The result passes at distance and in poor light and falls apart under attention:
- The skin sits loose at the joints and stretches wrong across the face.
- Movement is fractionally out of sync — a blink that lasts too long, a head turn that starts a beat late.
- Speech is mimicry rather than conversation. It has words, and it uses them in the right order, but it tends to return your own phrasing to you rather than answer what you said.
The test that works
Ask it something that requires an actual answer rather than a repetition.
A Skin-Stealer can reproduce language it has heard. It handles novel questions badly — questions about something specific to you, or about the immediate surroundings, or anything requiring it to reason rather than echo. The failure is usually immediate and obvious.
Do this from a distance. Do not do it in a dead end.
What actually works
- Keep distance from anyone you meet. In the Backrooms, human shape is not evidence of a human.
- Do not let one get behind you. They close distance during conversation.
- Leave rather than confirm. You do not need to be certain it is a Skin-Stealer. You need to not be there.
- Trust the wrongness. Explorers consistently report noticing something was off well before they could articulate what. That instinct is reliable; the fatal error is talking yourself out of it to be polite.
Why they are rated extreme
Every other entity in the upper levels announces itself. Hounds are audible, Smilers are visible, Facelings are unmistakable at close range. A Skin-Stealer is the only one that gets close by invitation.
